It often occurs after injury, immobility, advanced venous insufficiency, or other conditions that affect blood flow and clotting. \u039f <a href=\"https:\/\/bisdasmd.gr\/en\/bio\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Dr Theodosios Bisdas, MD, PhD, FACS, Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery and Director of the 3rd Department of Vascular Surgery at Athens Medical Centre<\/strong><\/a>, highlights the importance of early  <strong>diagnosis <\/strong> and  <strong>treatment <\/strong> to prevent complications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is superficial thrombophlebitis?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Superficial thrombophlebitis<\/strong> is an inflammatory condition affecting superficial veins, most commonly in the lower limbs. <a href=\"https:\/\/bisdasmd.gr\/en\/en-tw-vathei-fleviki-thromvosi-flevothromvosi\/\" target=\"_self\">Compared with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)<\/a>, which involves <strong>larger deep<\/strong> veins, <strong>superficial thrombophlebitis<\/strong> typically carries a lower risk of severe complications. However, if untreated, it can cause significant <strong>discomfort <\/strong>and<strong> local complications<\/strong>. In neglected cases, it may lead to pulmonary embolism if the clot extends to the junction between superficial and deep veins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What causes superficial thrombophlebitis?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">It develops when the wall of a superficial vein becomes irritated or injured, leading to clot formation and inflammation. In some cases, however, it can progress to DVT, increasing the <strong>risk of pulmonary embolism.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>superficial thrombophlebitis<\/strong> is usually treated with simple and non-invasive methods, which aim at reducing pain, inflammation and preventing complications. The basic treatment methods include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Anti-inflammatory medicines<\/strong> (e.g. ibuprofen, if appropriate)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation<\/strong> of the affected limb<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Compression stockings<\/strong>  to support venous flow<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Gentle mobilisation<\/strong> (walking helps prevent stasis)<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Anticoagulation<\/strong>: depending on clot extent and proximity to the deep venous system; rarely, surgical ligation of the superficial\u2013deep junction may be recommended<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Early<\/strong> diagnosis and treatment are essential.
