At Critical Issues in Aortic Endografting 2025, in Paris, France, talks were given on the application of new endovascular techniques in the treatment of complex thoracoabdominal aneurysms.<\/p>\n
Endovascular repair uses endografts<\/a>, special constructions combining a metal frame with durable synthetic material, which are placed inside the aorta, isolating the aneurysm from the pressure.<\/p>\n These are aneurysms that extend from the thoracic into the abdominal aorta and involve the origins of the visceral and renal arteries. They are among the most demanding vascular surgical conditions, as the repair has to preserve the blood supply of the organs.<\/p>\n \u039c\u03b5 endografts<\/a> with fenestrations or branches, which are placed through small punctures in the femoral arteries, under continuous imaging guidance in the hybrid operating room<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In thoracoabdominal aneurysms the aorta has to be repaired in a segment from which arteries arise to the liver, the intestine, the spleen and the kidneys. Each of these branches must retain its flow, otherwise the corresponding organ is at risk. This is why the procedure requires specially designed endografts and experience in a centre with the appropriate infrastructure.<\/p>\n Compared with open surgery, endovascular management limits the surgical trauma, reduces blood loss, allows immediate mobilisation of the patient and shortens the hospital stay to a few days. Cardiopulmonary bypass and its possible complications are also avoided.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Aortic aneurysms rarely produce symptoms before rupture. When they are diagnosed early, usually as an incidental finding on imaging carried out for another reason, they can be monitored and treated on a planned basis.
