First use in Greece of the Indigo 12F thrombus aspiration catheter (Penumbra), in a patient with acute lower limb ischaemia. The procedure was performed in the Hybrid operating room of the Athens Medical Center.<\/p>\n
An aspiration catheter is an instrument that is introduced through a small puncture and mechanically removes the thrombus, restoring blood flow immediately.<\/p>\n
Thrombi result in the blockage of blood circulation. In acute limb ischaemia, restoring flow is urgent. See peripheral arterial disease<\/a> and the venous thrombosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n It is the abrupt interruption of the blood supply to a limb by a thrombus or an embolus. It presents with sudden pain, pallor, coldness and inability to move. According to the ESVS guidelines, the window for restoring flow without irreversible muscle damage is approximately 6 hours.<\/p>\n The catheter is introduced through a small puncture and aspirates the thrombus under fluoroscopic guidance, restoring flow immediately. Where needed, it is combined with angioplasty or stent placement<\/a> in the same session.<\/p>\n Mechanical removal of the thrombus gives an immediate result and makes it possible to avoid prolonged thrombolysis with its haemorrhagic complications. Early recognition of the symptoms and immediate transfer to a centre with vascular surgery cover are decisive for saving the limb. Anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment follows as appropriate, together with control of the risk factors.
