At the pan-European amputation prevention conference, Amputation Prevention Symposium 2022, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the talk concerned the hybrid surgical treatment of iliac artery occlusions and the retrograde recanalisation of chronic peripheral occlusions.<\/p>\n
These procedures are performed in the hybrid operating room<\/a>, the space that combines imaging and navigation equipment inside the vessels with the best possible aseptic conditions for open procedures.<\/p>\n The iliac arteries carry blood from the abdominal aorta towards the lower limbs. When they become occluded by atherosclerosis, the blood supply of both legs is drastically reduced. Symptoms range from pain on walking to pain at rest and wounds that do not heal.<\/p>\n It combines open and endovascular techniques in the same procedure. This is possible only in a hybrid operating room<\/a>, where there is imaging equipment inside the room together with the aseptic conditions of a conventional operating theatre. In this way the treatment is adapted to the anatomy of the patient.<\/p>\n When a chronic occlusion cannot be crossed from the conventional direction, the surgeon approaches the vessel from the opposite end. The technique significantly increases the chances of success in lesions that were previously considered untreatable endovascularly.<\/p>\n Restoring the blood supply is the precondition for a wound to heal in diabetic foot<\/a>.
