An diabetic foot<\/a> is linked to the continuous increase in the number of people with diabetes worldwide and requires early diagnosis and systematic follow-up.<\/p>\n A Greek scientific society that brings together diabetologists, vascular surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and wound-healing specialists. This composition reflects the nature of the problem: diabetic foot<\/a> is not treated by one speciality alone.<\/p>\n By 2050 one in seven people is expected to have diabetes, while 25% of them will develop a foot ulcer at some point. Every 20 seconds a diabetic foot is amputated somewhere on the planet.<\/p>\n It focuses on restoring the blood supply. If narrowings or occlusions are found, the surgeon can proceed to angioplasty with a stent<\/a> or a surgical bypass. Improving the blood supply is the precondition for the wounds to heal.<\/p>\n Daily inspection of the feet, appropriate footwear, regular vascular check-ups and proper control of diabetes. Early diagnosis prevents problems before they become dangerous. See peripheral arterial disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n From palpation of the pulses and measurement of the ankle-brachial index, where a value below 0.9 establishes the diagnosis of arterial disease, to colour duplex ultrasound of the arteries. In patients with diabetes the index can be falsely normal because of calcification, so additional tests are required.<\/p>\n A wound that does not heal, pain at rest and particularly at night, a cold or blue toe. These require immediate assessment by a vascular surgeon. See intermittent claudication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The management of diabetic foot requires collaboration between specialities: the diabetologist controls the diabetes, the vascular surgeon restores the blood supply, the wound-healing specialist cares for the ulcer. None of them is sufficient alone, which is why the conferences of such societies bring all the specialities together.
