Egyptian Vascular Summit 2020, Cairo, Egypt – Lectures on the application of new endovascular techniques in the treatment of diabetic foot and complex thoracoabdominal aneurysms.
What was presented at the Egyptian Vascular Summit 2020?
At the Egyptian Vascular Summit 2020 in Cairo, Egypt, talks were given on the application of new endovascular techniques in the treatment of diabetic foot and of complex thoracoabdominal aneurysms.
See more about the diabetic foot and about the Abdominal aortic aneurysm, which the general public calls a "silent bomb" because it grows without symptoms.
What are thoracoabdominal aneurysms?
Aneurysms that extend from the thoracic into the abdominal aorta and involve the origins of the visceral and renal arteries. The repair has to preserve the blood supply of the liver, the intestine, the spleen and the kidneys, which is why it requires special endografts with fenestrations or branches.
Why are they discussed together with diabetic foot?
Both require advanced endovascular techniques and hybrid operating room infrastructure. At one end of the scale is the aorta, at the other the fine arteries below the knee. The common element is minimally invasive access through a puncture.
What does it mean for high-risk patients?
Many patients with a thoracoabdominal aneurysm cannot withstand an open procedure because of age or comorbidities. For them the endovascular solution is not simply preferable, it is often the only realistic option.
Where can you read more?
See in detail diabetic foot, τα EVAR endografts and the comparison of endovascular and open repair.
How are the endografts placed?
Through small punctures in the femoral arteries, under continuous imaging guidance in the hybrid operating room. No large incision is required, nor cardiopulmonary bypass, and the hospital stay is limited to a few days.
What follows afterwards?
Lifelong imaging follow-up with CT angiography is required, so that it can be confirmed that the endograft remains in the correct position and that there is no leakage around it.
The Egyptian Vascular Summit is one of the largest vascular surgery conferences in the Middle East and North Africa region. Speakers are invited from Europe mainly for techniques that are not yet widely applied in the region. See the pioneering procedures.
